Remo Stars’ Fifth Straight Defeat: 5 Stats That Tell a Worrying Story

Remo Stars squad

Remo Stars’ early-season wobble has turned into a full-blown crisis. The defending NPFL champions fell 2–1 to Nasarawa United on Thursday in Lafia—their sixth defeat in nine games across all competitions—and their fifth straight loss in a run that has exposed serious cracks in Daniel Ogunmodede’s side.

Despite an early goal from Michael Ibrahim, the visitors were undone by a spirited Nasarawa comeback, with John Joshua and Jofrank Istifanus finding the net to seal a memorable win for the Solid Miners, Footballrover reports.

The result leaves Remo Stars languishing in 17th place with just 10 points, while Nasarawa climbed back to the top of the table.

Here are five stats that paint a worrying picture for the Sky Blue Stars:

1. Five Defeats in Just 6 Matches

After 23 games in their title-winning season, Remo Stars had lost only five times. This campaign, they’ve already matched that figure in just six NPFL outings.

Their inability to reproduce the solidity and control of last season has been the biggest red flag in their title defence.

2. Only One Win in Six NPFL Matches

Their last league victory came against Wilki Tourist. Since then, it’s been one setback after another — a reflection of both poor conversion up front and fragile defending at the back.

For a team once defined by consistency, a return of just three points from the last 15 available is alarming.

3. Five Straight Defeats in All Competitions

Since losing heavily to Katsina United in the NPFL and Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round, Remo Stars have slumped to three consecutive league defeats—against Kwara United, another loss at home, and now Nasarawa United.

The sequence highlights both a mental and tactical slump.

4. 15 Goals Conceded, Only 4 Scored

The defensive discipline that defined their championship run has suddenly evaporated.

In their last five games across all competitions, Remo Stars have shipped 15 goals while managing just four in return—a stunning contrast to the side that once prided itself on clean sheets and compact structure.

5. Echoes of 2022 — But Can They Recover Again?

The last time Remo Stars lost three straight NPFL matches was in February 2022—yet they rallied to finish third and qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.

That memory offers a sliver of hope, but this time the challenge feels deeper. The fixtures ahead will test not just their form but their identity as champions.

Beyond the Numbers: Ogunmodede’s Absence and the Coaching Dilemma

Amid the poor results, speculation about Daniel Ogunmodede’s future at the club only added to the confusion.

Reports earlier this week claimed that the long-serving coach had resigned after a fallout with the club hierarchy.

Remo Stars, however, swiftly denied the rumours, reaffirming their support for Ogunmodede and clarifying that he remains part of the setup while also continuing in his assistant role with the Super Eagles.

Daniel Ogunmodede Remo Stars coach under pressure

The coach has been away from the dugout since the 5–1 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns, missing both the return leg in South Africa and the 3–1 defeat to Kwara United. It later emerged that Ogunmodede was in Abuja for a CAF B coaching course, explaining his absence.

His dual commitments are nothing new. Last season, he missed over ten NPFL games — including key fixtures during their title run — due to national team duties and CHAN involvement.

Despite that, the club has once again backed him to balance both responsibilities, even as their domestic form continues to nosedive.

The question now is whether Remo Stars can rediscover stability with their coach juggling dual national assignments ahead of the 2025 AFCON.

From defending champions to relegation-zone dwellers, the story of the Ikenne boys so far is a warning of how quickly momentum can vanish in the NPFL.

Whether this marks a temporary slump or a full-blown crisis will depend on how fast they rediscover their title-winning mentality.
