The current champions of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Remo Stars, have advanced to the next round of the CAF Champions League after edging US Zilimadjou 1-0 in the second leg at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena on Friday evening.

The narrow victory sealed a commanding 5-0 aggregate win and kept the Sky Blue Stars’ continental dream alive, Footballrover reports.

Oyowah’s Penalty Seals the Job for Remo Stars

The match was tense and cagey for long spells as Zilimadjou defended stubbornly, determined not to suffer another heavy defeat after the first leg. It took 73 minutes for Remo Stars to finally break the deadlock.

A low cross from Ibrahim Abubakar struck the hand of a Zilimadjou defender inside the box, earning the NPFL champions a decisive penalty.

Alex Oyowah stepped up with composure, driving the ball straight down the middle to score the winner and settle any lingering nerves.

The goal sparked celebrations among the Ikenne faithful in the stands, confirming that the Sky Blue Stars would progress to the next stage of Africa’s premier club competition.

The result added another chapter to Remo Stars’ rising continental story.

Their 4-0 demolition of Zilimadjou in Comoros during the first leg had already been marked as their biggest-ever victory in any continental competition. It was also the most emphatic win by a Nigerian club in Africa since 2022.

By completing the task at home, coach Daniel Ogunmodede’s side showed they could combine flair with discipline—an encouraging sign as they prepare for a daunting second preliminary round clash with South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns.

Before that high-stakes encounter, Remo Stars will return to domestic action in the NPFL, where they face Abia Warriors on October 1st.
