It was a night of mixed fortunes for Nigerian stars in European football. Philip Otele lit up the Swiss Super League with an instant impact off the bench, yet FC Basel suffered heartbreak in the dying moments.
Meanwhile, in Russia, Moses Cobnan delivered the decisive moment for FC Krasnodar, securing a crucial win, Footballrover reports.
But how did it all unfold?
Philip Otele’s instant impact not enough for Basel
Coming on in the 64th minute, Philip Otele wasted no time making his presence felt.
Just three minutes later, the 25-year-old winger found the back of the net, levelevelling score at 1-1 against Young Boys in their Swiss Super League clash at St. Jakob-Park.
Otele, currently on loan from UAE Pro League side Al Wahda, registered his third goal of the season in nine league appearances.
His first came in a dominant 4-1 victory over Sion, followed by another in a 2-1 defeat to Servette.
However, despite his brilliance against Young Boys, Basel’s joy was short-lived.
The visitors had taken an early lead in the very first minute when Christian Fassnacht struck the post before converting the rebound.
Basel fought hard and found their equaliser through Otele, thanks to a pinpoint assist from former Premier League star Xherdan Shaqiri.
But just when it seemed like they had clawed their way back, Young Boys struck again in the 78th minute—once more through Fassnacht—leaving Basel stunned.
The loss saw Basel surrender their top spot to Servette, slipping to second place with 46 points.
Moses Cobnan secures Krasnodar’s top spot in Russia
While Otele’s effort ended in heartbreak, Moses Cobnan had a different story to tell in Russia.
The 22-year-old striker came off the bench and delivered when it mattered most, netting the only goal in FC Krasnodar’s 1-0 win over Rostov in the Russian Premier League.
Cobnan struck in the 78th minute to seal all three points, helping Krasnodar extend their lead at the top of the table.
It was his third goal of the season and a defining moment in a hard-fought contest at the Rostov Arena.
His Nigerian compatriot, Olakunle Olusegun, also featured in the match, playing 88 minutes as Krasnodar tightened their grip on the league summit.
It was a tale of two super-subs on Sunday night. Philip Otele dazzled but couldn’t save Basel from heartbreak, while Moses Cobnan delivered a match-winning moment that sent Krasnodar three points clear.
