It was a night of mixed fortunes for Nigerian stars Obinna Nwobodo and Ibrahim Gbadamosi on the continental stage, as one orchestrated proceedings in North America while the other bowed out despite a valiant effort in Asia.
While Nwobodo displayed his playmaking brilliance, Gbadamosi was busy firing on all cylinders, Footballrover reports.
Nwobodo Shines as Cincinnati Run Riot in the Caribbean
Obinna Nwobodo delivered a commanding midfield performance as FC Cincinnati stormed to a 4–0 away victory over O&M FC in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup Round One tie.
The Nigerian midfielder was central to everything positive the visitors produced.
He registered two assists — setting up Cincinnati’s second and third goals — and dictated the tempo from start to finish.
His outstanding display earned him Man of the Match honours as he builds momentum ahead of the new MLS season.
The scoreline could have been even more emphatic. Cincinnati were awarded a penalty in the 80th minute, but Ayoub Jabbari failed to convert from the spot, missing the opportunity to make it five and complete his hat-trick.
Nonetheless, the four-goal cushion leaves the American side firmly in control heading into the return leg.
Gbadamosi’s Brace Not Enough as Al Zawraa Exit
Meanwhile, it was heartbreak in the Middle East for Ibrahim Gbadamosi.
The 27-year-old forward struck twice — in the 21st and 85th minutes — but Al Zawraa fell 4–2 away to Al Wasl in the second leg of their AFC Champions League Two Round of 16 clash.
Despite his brace, Al Zawraa were eliminated 6–5 on aggregate in what proved to be a tightly contested affair.
On a personal level, however, Gbadamosi can take pride in an impressive campaign.
He finished the competition with five goals and one assist — a strong return that underlines his attacking quality, even as his side’s continental journey came to an end.
