In a landmark move to enhance the financial well-being of players in the Nigerian League, NPFL Chief Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye has announced a review of the minimum wage for players.
The league body has also announced the minimum amount players are expected to earn in the NPFL, effective next season, Footballrover reports.
The Nigeria Premier Football League boss revealed plans to increase the minimum wage from N150,000 to a yet-to-be-disclosed amount, citing the current economic climate as a driving factor.
During a live radio programme in Lagos, the NPFL Chairman emphasised the league’s commitment to player welfare, expressing disappointment that some clubs still pay below the minimum wage benchmark.
“The least NPFL players can earn is N150,000. By next season, we will upgrade it,” Elegbeleye stated.
The league body has discovered that some clubs are paying below the minimum wage, with some players accepting lower fees just to join these clubs.
To address this, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye stressed the need to compile the accounts of players, claiming that it is a necessary part of the licensing process.
This ensures transparency and accountability, as payment details for each player must be made through banks.
By upgrading the minimum wage and enforcing stricter financial regulations, the NPFL aims to create a more sustainable and equitable environment for its players, which is a commendable effort.
