Super Eagles-eligible striker Tolu Arokodare scored his 12th league goal of the season as KRC Genk suffered a tough away defeat against Anderlecht at Lotto Park on Saturday.
Despite the loss, Arokodare’s goal was the highlight for Genk, who were in dire need of a victory to stay in contention for European qualifying spots, Footballrover reports.
Genk’s Championship Round Woes Continue
Genk’s defeat against Anderlecht has dropped them to fourth place in the six-team Championship Round as they trail table-topper Anderlecht by 12 points and dashed hopes for European qualification.
Anderlecht started the game strongly, with several opportunities to take the lead, but couldn’t make good use of their chances.
Yari Verschaeren eventually broke the deadlock just before halftime, putting Anderlecht ahead.
In the second half, Kasper Dolberg doubled Anderlecht’s lead in the 70th minute, leaving Genk on the verge of their fourth consecutive defeat in the playoffs.
Arokodare’s goal Provides Glimmer of Hope
Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare provided a glimmer of hope for Genk by scoring five minutes later after combining well with Zakaria El Ouahdi.
However, their efforts weren’t good enough, as they were unable to find the equaliser.

Mathematically, they are out of title contention, making it highly unlikely to secure a spot in European competition.
