In a recent development in Nigerian football League, Okey Kpalukwu, Chairman of the NPFL Club Owners Association, has voiced his concerns about the excessive number of referees in the league, which he deems as too many.
Kpalukwu expressed his apprehension, stating;
“Right now we’ve too many referees, which means some of them will only officiate just a handful of games. This leads to lobbying by most, which is not good for our league.”
Kpalukwu’s call for reducing the number of referees is aimed at enhancing the quality and fairness of officiating in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
By having a more balanced distribution of matches among referees, he believes the league can eliminate any potential biases.
Kpalukwu emphasized the importance of transparency within the refereeing community.
He called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Referees Appointment and Disciplinary Committee to consistently make public the names of match officials who face disciplinary actions.
This, he believes, will send a clear and unequivocal message to others, reinforcing the need for integrity and accountability in Nigerian football refereeing.
Kpalukwu’s proposal and commitment to transparency mark a significant step towards improving the standards of the NPFL.
