Rivers United head coach Finidi George has shared his thoughts on his team’s performance after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Akwa United in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).
Despite taking an early lead, Rivers United could not hold on, conceding in the second half due to a defensive lapse, Footballrover reports.
Early lead slips away as Akwa United strike back
The south-south derby took place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, where both teams battled for crucial points.
Rivers United started on the front foot, breaking the deadlock in the 9th minute through Paschal Onunze.
The visitors looked in control, creating a few more chances but failing to extend their lead before halftime.
Akwa United, who have been struggling near the bottom of the table, came out stronger in the second half.
Their persistence paid off in the 57th minute when Mare Abson found the equaliser, capitalising on Rivers United’s defensive misstep.
Finidi George reflects on missed chances and defensive lapse
After the match, Finidi George acknowledged that his team had opportunities to secure all three points but ultimately had to settle for a draw.
“It was a good game. I thought we could have won it, but it didn’t happen. The players gave their best, but a slight defensive mistake allowed them to equalize,” Finidi stated.
He also pointed out a key missed opportunity in the second half.
“There was a moment where our striker could have finished better, but it didn’t go our way. In the end, we played with one man less and managed to hold on for a point.”
While he had hoped for maximum points, Finidi was satisfied with the outcome.
“Considering how the game unfolded, I believe it’s a well-deserved point,” he concluded.
The result keeps Rivers United in third place, while Akwa United continue to struggle in the relegation zone.
