Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin has issued a statement declaring Vincent Augustus, one of its players, as absent without official leave (AWOL).
The young winger has been notably absent from the club’s camp since the conclusion of the one-week mid-season break, Footballrover reports.
Mr. Charles Ihimekpen, the club’s secretary, expressed disappointment at Augustus’ failure to return to training or communicate his whereabouts to the management.
Ihimekpen emphasised the club’s confusion over Augustus’ prolonged absence, especially considering his existing contract with Bendel Insurance.
Despite attempts to reach Augustus, the club has been unable to establish contact or receive any explanation for his absence.
Ihimekpen explained the club’s commitment to professionalism and discipline, highlighting Augustus’ failure to adhere to these standards.
Furthermore, Ihimekpen stressed that Bendel Insurance is open to dialogue and would have appreciated Augustus formally informing the club of any reasons for his departure.
He emphasised the club’s willingness to explore mutually beneficial solutions, including contract termination if necessary.
The statement concluded with Ihimekpen expressing the club’s stance that no one is intent on forcing Augustus to remain against his will, but his lack of communication and unexplained absence constitute a breach of professional conduct.
“One would have expected the player to officially inform the club of his intentions if he has reasons to leave so that both parties can explore the means of mutual agreement on contract termination,” he said.
Ihimekpen further explained that;
“Nobody wants to tie him down here, and we have never received any complaints from him on any issues affecting his well-being in Benin.”
