The Nigeria U17 girls’ team, the Flamingos, have achieved significant success by qualifying for the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic after a thrilling 6-1 aggregate victory over Liberia.
Entering the second leg with a substantial advantage from their first-leg win in Monrovia, the Flamingos maintained their dominance, Footballrover reports.
Under the leadership of coach Bankole Olowookere, they secured a 4-1 victory last Sunday at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.
In the second leg, the Nigerian team continued their impressive performance, establishing an early lead.
Harmony Chidi played a vital role, scoring twice to ensure Nigeria’s spot in the 2024 U17 Women’s World Cup was sealed and delivered.
She netted goals in both halves, leading the Nigerian side to a 2-0 victory at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Friday evening.
Harmony opened the scoring just four minutes into the game, setting the tone for the Flamingos’ dominant display.
She then doubled her tally in the 63rd minute, securing her 12th goal of the qualifying round and sealing the victory for her team.
Despite having opportunities to score more, Chidi’s additional attempts in both halves were comfortably saved by the Liberian goalkeeper.
It’s a huge congratulations to the team and coaching staff for this remarkable achievement, showing off so much zeal and determination on the path to the World Cup.
