Another disappointing outing for Germany at the ongoing 2022 World Cup in Qatar, points shared between Spain and Germany as they playout a 1-1 draw on Sunday evening.

Spain entered this match comfortably in first place in Group E after thrashing Costa Rica 7-0 in their opening match to earn three points.

Prior to their final match in the group stage against Japan, victory over Germany would have guaranteed their spot in the round of 16.

At the other end, Germany has performed poorly throughout the tournament and entered this match at the bottom of Group E with no points to their name.

A victory would increase their chances of making it to the round of 16.

Early in the second half, Spain seized the lead thanks to Alvaro Morata, but Germany responded with an equalizer in the final 10 minutes thanks to Niklas Fullkrug.

It’s the 17th substitute goal scored so far in the tournament; already more than the 2018 World Cup’s tally already.

In actuality, a draw was a fair result that maintains Germany in the tournament going into the final match of the group stage, while Spain, who currently leads Group E, has not yet firmly established their position in the Round of 16.

Nothing to separate these two giants of world football. For Germany, a lifeline to secure a place in the knockout phase and Spain, a little bit of disappointment to let that lead slip through their fingers.

Though the Germans showed more attacking intent in the second half, but Spain scored first through Morata, while Füllkrug kept the Germans at Qatar 2022 with an 83rd-minute equalizer. It all comes down to the final day in Group E!

Germany will have to rely on other outcomes during their last match of the group stage against Costa Rica since they didn’t earn three points and their chances of qualifying is extremely narrow.

On Thursday, the final matchday of the group stage will also take place. While Spain will be battling Japan, Germany will lock horns with Costa Rica, a huge battle of survival.
