The 21-year-old Nigerian player, who helped Rivers United lift the NPFL title last season has decided to switch to the Slovenian top tier side in search of a new challenge.

The striker, a former player of 3SC and Remo Stars, with great physical strength, speed, and consistency, signed a three-year contract with NK Maribor.

NK Maribor took the right decision to sign the Super Eagles forward, both for the team’s competitive aims and for Maribor’s advancement in the Slovenian division.

Rafiu Ishaq is just one of many Nigerian stars who have shown that their nation is a haven for talent. He made his mark by helping Rivers United win the 2021/22 NPFL championship.

I am very happy that we agreed and that I signed the contract. After playing in the top tier of the competition in Nigeria and after winning the championship, I had quite a few offers from clubs from Europe, I decided to move to Maribor, because I believe that the best Slovenian club is currently the most suitable choice for me as the next step on the development path” – Rafiu Ishaq said.

Rafiu Ishaq added that;

As a multiple national champion and a long-term participant in European competitions, Maribor makes it possible for a football player to do what he wants. I am looking forward to a new challenge in my career, I want to contribute my share on the field and I can’t wait to meet my teammates, the professional staff and join the training sessions.”

The former Rivers United star further stressed;

I got a lot of information about the club, also heard about the great support of the fans. I believe that together we will bring them many reasons for satisfaction, with new victories and winning trophies.”

Rafiu Ishaq, who had 14 league goals in his last campaign with Rivers United, made his Super Eagles debut in the loss to Mexico in a friendly match in May.

With three points after two games, Maribor is currently seventh on the log and will face Olimpija in their next PrvaLiga match on August 6 at Ljudski vrt.
