Nigerian forward Johnbosco Kalu continued his red-hot form, scoring his fourth goal in three games to propel IFK Varnamo to a vital 2-0 victory over IFK Goteborg in the Swedish Allsvenskan on Sunday.
The 26-year-old striker opened the scoring for Varnamo in the 53rd minute at Finnvedsvallen Stadium, breaking the deadlock and setting the tone for the home side, Footballrover reports.
Ajdin Zeljkovic then doubled the lead four minutes later, securing all three points for Varnamo.
His counterpart Jonathan Rasheed stayed firm in goal, maintaining a clean sheet as IFK Varnamo secured a crucial home league victory.
Kalu’s goal against Goteborg extends his impressive scoring streak.
He previously netted the final goal in Varnamo’s dominant 4-0 win over Norrköping and found the back of the net in their narrow 2-1 defeat to Mjällby.
This impressive run takes Kalu’s tally to six goals in just nine Allsvenskan appearances this season.
He has also found the net once in another competition, bringing his total to seven goals in 10 matches across all competitions.
Kalu’s influence went beyond scoring, as he also created a big scoring opportunity for his teammates during the match, but they failed to capitalise.
He played the full 90 minutes and put in a well-rounded performance, contributing to both defence and attack.
The victory lifts Varnamo to ninth place in the 16-team league standings with 17 points.
While they still trail league leaders Malmö by a huge margin of 18 points, they are comfortably clear of the relegation zone, sitting four points above the drop.
Kalu, who joined Varnamo in 2022, has easily established himself as a key player for the club.
His impressive performances and long-term contract, running until 2026, suggest he will continue to be a vital part of Varnamo’s future success.
This win provides a much-needed boost for Varnamo, and Kalu’s goalscoring form will be crucial as they look to climb further up the Allsvenskan table in the coming days when they visit Djurgården on Sunday.
