In response to a string of disappointing performances, Heartland FC has taken drastic measures for their players, slashing their salaries in half until further notice.
Footballrover understands that this decision comes after a humiliating 5-1 defeat at home to Plateau United, marking a historic low for the Owerri-based club.
General Manager Promise Nwachukwu expressed deep disappointment following the match, emphasising the need for players to take responsibility for the team’s poor showing.
He stressed that such performances tarnish the club’s reputation and demanded immediate improvement from the players.
Nwachukwu cited contractual agreements where poor performance is met with stringent measures, including salary reductions.
He made it clear that underperforming players must elevate their game or face additional sanctions.
“The club management has decided to slash the salaries of the players by half from now henceforth until the team’s performance improves,” Nwachukwu announced.
He further lamented,
“In all my time at the club, I have never seen a time Heartland FC played so poorly.”
Nwachukwu claimed that the situation transcends coaching, emphasising the players’ accountability for the loss and the need to restore their image with a victory against the Sunshine Stars on Sunday.
Heartland FC, with just three wins in 22 league games this season, faces an uphill battle to salvage their campaign.
Their next fixture against the Sunshine Stars poses another crucial test for the struggling side.
Nwachukwu concluded by urging players to honour the club’s legacy and strive for excellence, emphasising that every match is an opportunity to restore pride and uphold the team’s esteemed reputation.
