Gombe United has continued to create an unwanted record as their struggles in the 2023–2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) have finally culminated in relegation after a dismal 2-0 home defeat to Sunshine Stars on Sunday.
This loss confirmed their demotion to the Nigerian National League (NNL), marking their fourth relegation since the turn of the millennium, Footballrover reports.
The Savannah Scorpions suffered their fourth relegation in 24 years after enjoying a top-division position for three seasons in a row.
The team’s woes were compounded by goals from Promise Awosanmi and Lucky Nwafor, which left them with a dismal record of 17 losses and only eight wins this season.
With 25 points from 34 matches, Gombe United have struggled to find their footing, conceding a staggering 63 goals while scoring just 19.
Despite having four matches remaining, Gombe United’s fate is already sealed and delivered to their fans—a heartbreaking moment for the team.
However, they still have four more tasks ahead as the team will be facing Katsina United, Abia Warriors, Rivers United, and league leaders Enugu Rangers in their final games, but it’s a matter of playing out the season.
This relegation marks a sad milestone for Gombe United, who join an unenviable list of teams with multiple relegations since 2000.
Only Kwara United (6), Wikki Tourists (5), and Jigawa Golden Stars have suffered more demotions.
Gombe United’s fans will be left wondering what went wrong as their team’s NPFL dreams are shattered once again.
The team’s management will have to regroup and rebuild for a promotion push in the NNL next season.
