After a long wait, Rivers United has reclaimed the top spot in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table for the first time since the end of the 2021/22 season—a remarkable 798 days.
This comeback was fuelled by a mix of determination, tactical prowess, and a dash of fortune against Lobi Stars, Footballrover reports.
The decisive moment came in the 79th minute, when Kabir Abdullahi seized on a rebound from Taiwo AbdulRafiu’s initial shot.
Lobi Stars goalkeeper, Daniel Emmanuel, fumbled the attempt, allowing Abdullahi to tap in the only goal of the match.
This marked Abdullahi’s third goal in just two games, following his brace against Heartland last weekend.
The win in Lafia was not just a stroke of luck; it shows how solid Rivers United’s solid defence line is, led by captain Temple Emekayi.
Throughout the match, Coach Finidi George’s side displayed a combination of grit and tactical discipline, with players working tirelessly to maintain their shape in and around the penalty box.
This collective effort culminated in a hard-earned 1-0 victory, securing their first away win of the 2024/2025 NPFL season and extending their unbeaten run to three matches.
