Nigerian defender Ebube Duru made a splash on Wednesday with his debut for Sønderjyske Fodbold in a Danish Cup match, following a successful trial that led to a lucrative contract with the club.
The 25-year-old, who had been a free agent since leaving Rivers United over a year ago, has signed a three-year deal with the Superliga outfit, Footballrover reports.
After an extended trial period, Duru finally secured a contract that will keep him in Sønderjyske’s colors until the summer of 2027.
With his work and residence permits sorted, Duru was named in Sønderjyske’s starting XI for their cup clash against Solrød at the Solrød Sports Centre.
The match proved to be a triumphant one as Duru and his new teammates demolished their opponents 7-0.
Remarkably, three of the goals came from the penalty spot as Sønderjyske cruised to a commanding victory.
Casper Daather, the team’s sporting manager, praised Duru’s performance, noting that they had been closely monitoring him for some time.
Daather highlighted Duru’s impressive physique, power, and ambition, all of which promise great potential.
However, he also acknowledged that Duru might need some time to adjust to playing football in Europe.
“He has good raw material, which we look forward to developing together in our setup, and now that the contract and the various papers are in place,” Casper Daather said.
Before his move to Denmark, Duru earned four senior international caps for Nigeria and was part of the Rivers United team that clinched the Nigerian championship in 2021.
