Ex-Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, has shared the key message that has inspired his Rivers United side’s unbeaten start to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) this season, following their recent hard-fought victory over Akwa United.

The Port Harcourt-based team has been in formidable form, remaining unbeaten with four consecutive wins and one draw, amassing 13 points in total, Footballrover reports.

Their resilience was again on display in their narrow 2-1 win against the Promise Keepers at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, a result that keeps them at the top of the NPFL standings.

When asked what message has driven this impressive start, the former Super Eagles coach revealed the core philosophy he instilled in his players: belief.

“I told them to always believe they can go far this season,” Finidi said. “Even when the score was 1-1, they kept pushing for that second goal. I must commend the boys for their effort—they never gave up.”

Despite the win, Finidi admitted that Akwa United provided a stern test for his squad, praising the determination of his players to secure all three points in a challenging contest.

The Garden City side opened the scoring through Stephen Manyo, who netted a half-volley in the 31st minute following a well-placed corner by Okon Aniekeme.

Akwa United responded just after the break, with Friday Apollo levelling the score. However, Ndifreke Effiong sealed the victory with a late goal five minutes from time, cementing Rivers United’s unbeaten run.

“It was a tough three points,” Finidi acknowledged. “Akwa United came with the intention to get a result, and they pushed us hard, but in the end, we deserved the win.”

With this victory, Rivers United now sits atop the NPFL table, one point ahead of Enyimba and Remo Stars. The Pride of Rivers next faces an away challenge against Katsina United.

Following the win, the Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Chris Green, rewarded the players with N2 million for their continued success.
