Super Eagles’ caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen has revealed what he believes is Nigeria’s only means of securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With Nigeria’s current struggles in the qualification series, Eguavoen emphasised the importance of a winning mindset and sheer determination to turn things around, Footballrover reports.

Despite their shaky start, Eguavoen remains confident that the Super Eagles can still clinch a place at football’s biggest stage.

However, the coach made it clear that they must approach each remaining game as if it were a final and fight for every available point.

Super Eagles’ qualification hopes hang by a thread

Nigeria’s journey to the World Cup has been far from smooth. After four matches, the three-time African champions sit in fifth place in Group C, having accumulated just three points.

Meanwhile, Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin Republic are all tied at the top with seven points, making Nigeria’s task even more daunting.

Speaking with Brila FM, Eguavoen stressed that winning the remaining games—no matter how slim the margins—will be key to keeping Nigeria’s World Cup dreams alive.

We have to approach every game like a cup final and we have a big chance once we keep winning these remaining games even if it were by 1-0,” he said.

Upcoming showdowns test Eguavoen’s strategy

While the World Cup qualifiers don’t resume until March 2024, when Nigeria faces Rwanda away, the Super Eagles have a pressing challenge before them.

They are set to face Libya in crucial back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

First, Nigeria will host the Mediterranean Knights on Friday, October 11, before traveling to Benina just four days later.

Eguavoen will undoubtedly be looking to build momentum in these AFCON qualifiers as his team prepares for the all-important World Cup quest.
