Chuba Akpom finally opened his account for the season with a goal and an assist in AFC Ajax emphatic home win over Fortuna Sittard in the Eredivisie.
The Nigerian forward was instrumental as Ajax demolished Fortuna Sittard 5-0 in the Dutch league on Wednesday night, Footballrover reports.
Coming into the match after a narrow 2-1 loss to NAC Breda in their second league outing, Ajax were eager to bounce back, and they did so in spectacular fashion.
Ajax dominated from the start, with Kenneth Taylor opening the scoring just nine minutes into the game.
Akpom then played a key role, providing an assist for Bertrand Traore, who doubled Ajax’s lead in the 24th minute.
Fortuna Sittard’s night went from bad to worse when Rodrigo Guth was shown a straight red card, forcing them to play the entire second half with 10 men.
Youri Baas extended Ajax’s lead to 3-0 in the 58th minute, and Devyne Rensch added another 13 minutes later.
With just three minutes left on the clock, Akpom capped off the performance by scoring Ajax’s fifth goal, marking his first goal and assist of the season.
Ajax’s dominance was clear, registering over 25 goal attempts and 14 shots on target, while Fortuna Sittard managed just one shot on goal.
The win lifts Ajax to seventh place in the Eredivisie, with six points from three matches.
