Burna Boy Academy’s hard-fought 2-2 draw with Skyhawk FC at the Airforce base in Port Harcourt on Tuesday has left their head coach far from impressed.
Despite showing resilience by coming back from two goals down, the academy coach was adamant that his players could have done better, Footballrover reports.
As both sides shared the spoils after a dramatic second half, the coach’s post-match comments revealed his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance.
Here’s a breakdown of the game and the coach’s exclusive reaction.
Burna Boy Academy fights back against Skyhawk FC
It was a battle that could have gone either way. Burna Boy Academy, who had dominated early on, controlled the pace of the match, dictating play and pressing Skyhawk FC in all areas.
However, the first half ended without goals, and the game exploded in the second half.
Skyhawk FC capitalised on Burna Boy Academy’s missed opportunities, scoring twice in quick succession.
Within ten minutes, the Military Hawks stunned the visitors, who were left to rue their earlier squandered chances.
Despite the setback, Burna Boy Academy showed grit, clawing back with two late goals courtesy of their star winger, Inaizi Georgebala.
His pace and clinical finishes ensured the game ended in a draw, but it wasn’t enough to satisfy the coach.
Coach’s reaction: “We should have done better.”
Speaking exclusively to Footballrover, the Burna Boy Academy coach Dayo Atoyebi didn’t hold back.
“Honestly I’m not impressed, because they should have done better. I know my boys and what they are capable of,” he stated.
Despite the outcome of the game, the coach expressed his frustration, citing his team’s inability to convert chances in the first half.
“Goals that were expected to be scored weren’t scored from the first half,” he said, claiming that the result could have been different had his team capitalised on their early dominance.
The turning point: Skyhawk FC’s quick goals
What went wrong for Burna Boy Academy in the early stages of the second half?
“Well, the first 10 minutes of the second half, despite the poor officiating from the referee, I mean, that first goal was an offside,” the coach revealed. “But nevertheless, I told my boys to put that behind and try to use the spaces on the pitch to turn the game to our favour.”
His team’s resilience showed, but they were left frustrated by the unconverted chances that ultimately cost them.
Coach Dayo on the team’s resilience and mindset
Despite conceding two quick goals, the Academy coach maintained his faith in his players. When asked what he told them after the second goal, he responded,
“Nothing much, we the coaches just have to observe some weakness and misunderstanding on the pitch and quickly correct it, that’s why we are there.”
At any point, did he feel the game was slipping away?
“No! I surely believe that my team will get something from the game, even more, they were even more better than the opponents, just that goals weren’t coming,” he stated.
Burna Boy Academy deserved more than a point, says coach Dayo
Even after the dramatic late comeback, the coach believed his team deserved more than just a draw.
“Yes, sure, we deserve more than a point… But when you play soccer without converting your chances, you end up having bad results,” he explained.
The Academy boys will now turn their focus to their next fixture, determined to make amends and impress their coach, who was visibly frustrated, nearly losing his voice as he passionately urged them on from the touchline throughout the match.
