Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi has officially signed with Greek giants Olympiacos FC.
The 25-year-old left-back joins the club from Portugal’s Boavista on a contract until June 2028, Footballrover reports.
But what makes this transfer even more special?
Onyemaechi became the 7th Nigerian player to represent Olympiacos, following in the footsteps of iconic names like Rashidi Yekini (1994-1995) and Emmanuel Emenike (2017-2018).
Others include
Haruna Babangida 2005-2007, Michael Olaitan 2013-2015, Brown Ideye 2015-2017, and Henry Onyekuru 2021-2022.
A key addition to Olympiacos’ defensive lineup
Bruno Onyemaechi’s arrival at Olympiacos adds depth to their defence as the club pushes for success both domestically and in Europe.
Known for his solid defensive work rate and attacking contributions, the Nigerian international has impressed with Boavista, where he scored five goals and provided three assists in 77 appearances.
His recent form, which includes three goals and one assist in just 18 matches this season, caught the attention of Olympiacos, who are currently leading the Greek Super League and securing a playoff spot in the UEFA Europa League.
Onyemaechi now has the opportunity to display his full potential on a higher European stage while working hard to improve his game as a player.
Bruno Onyemaechi’s rise with the Super Eagles
Onyemaechi’s rise has not only been limited to club football. He has earned 11 caps for the Super Eagles since his debut in a 6-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe in 2023.
His contributions were also key in Nigeria’s runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, solidifying his place as an important member of the national team.
“First of all, I’m really happy to be here. When I first told my family about it, they all accepted it. Now I’m looking forward to it and hope to see the supporters in the stadium.
It’s something that every player dreams of—to be able to play in this kind of atmosphere. So, I’m really happy to feel it and see how the supporters will react.
I looked at the possibilities of playing in Europe; this is what drove me more to be here, and I’m really happy to be here.” Bruno said
With his move to Olympiacos, Onyemaechi’s journey to the top is only just beginning.
His role as the 7th Nigerian to join Olympiacos places him among the greats, and his future in both club and international football looks promising.
