The Super Eagles have been the standout team at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, impressing fans with a flawless run that has seen them win all five group and knockout matches.
Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has revealed that the team’s success goes beyond tactics, crediting brotherhood, unity, and shared purpose for Nigeria’s remarkable performances, Footballrover reports.
Brotherhood and Unity: The Super Eagles’ Secret Weapon
Iwobi told reporters ahead of Nigeria’s semi-final clash with hosts Morocco that the Eagles’ strong bond has been the foundation of their success.
“For me, it is the family environment we have created, the brotherhood within the team. Everyone cares about how the other feels, and we are united and all pushing in the same direction to make sure we succeed on the pitch,” Iwobi explained.
This focus on camaraderie has translated into commanding performances against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Mozambique, and Algeria, with Nigeria scoring 14 goals—the highest of any team in the tournament.
Growth Since AFCON 2023: From Youthful Squad to Mature Contenders
Reflecting on the previous AFCON, Iwobi admitted that the Super Eagles players were just youngsters, but the experiences gained then laid the foundation for their current dominance.
“From the previous AFCON, where we performed very well, we were a bit young, but you realise now everyone is entering their prime and performing well both at club and the national team,” the midfielder said.
The team’s development has also been fuelled by disappointment from missing the World Cup, which Iwobi believes has sharpened their focus and determination.
“We are trying to use that disappointment as a push factor for ourselves and our country. I feel like everybody has this task ahead that we want to win every game,” Iwobi noted.
Leadership On and Off the Pitch
The midfielder emphasised that while the Super Eagles show flair and aggression on the field, they also nurture trust and connection off it.
“There is a lot of characters, lots of personalities, but when we go to the pitch, we go for war; we fight and make sure we give our best. I hope everyone out there is enjoying the content,” he said.
The Super Eagles are fully prepared to face Morocco in the semi-final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. A place in the final awaits the winners of this highly anticipated clash.
