In a Serie A match against Empoli, Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman showed why he’s one of the best once again, netting a crucial goal for Atalanta as they clinched a 2-0 victory at the Gewiss Stadium.

The Bergamo-based club, eyeing a European spot in the upcoming 2024–25 season, bolstered their aspirations with this significant win, Footballrover reports.

The deadlock was broken in the 42nd minute when Elia Caprile, Empoli’s goalkeeper, managed to get a hand on Mario Pasalic’s penalty but couldn’t prevent it from finding the back of the net, handing Gian Gasperini’s side the lead.

Lookman, a standout performer for Super Eagles in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, unleashed a blistering shot into the bottom left corner in the second half to double Atalanta’s advantage.

This goal marked Lookman’s ninth in 27 appearances for Atalanta this season, bringing him within striking distance of the top three Super Eagles scorers in Europe.

Currently, Lookman trails behind Terem Moffi, Victor Boniface, and Victor Osimhen, who occupy the top spots with 13, 11, and 11 goals, respectively, in Europe’s top five leagues.

However, Lookman’s consistent performances hint at his potential to surpass these formidable competitors.

He has directly contributed to five of Atalanta’s last eight goals in all competitions.

With seven matches left in the 2023–24 campaign, Lookman is poised to build on his goal tally and potentially surpass Osimhen’s leading mark.
