The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is now set to crack down on organisations that use its name without permission.
This strong stance comes after an unauthorised Eunisell boot award for the highest goal scorer in the recently ended 2024/25 season was announced, drawing the ire of the league’s leadership, Footballrover reports.
NPFL takes firm stand on league assets
The NPFL boss says they are ready to take legal steps to protect its brand and ensure proper procedures are followed for all partnerships.
Chairman of the Nigerian topflight, Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, expressed the league’s frustration with companies ignoring its naming rights.
While the league appreciates initiatives that add value, like the N3.6 million proposed payment to Anas Yusuf, Elegbeleye stressed that there are clear rules for partnering with the league management to organise awards.
He stated firmly that no one should use the league name to announce an award without first getting permission from the league, which owns these valuable assets.
“It is not right for any persons or organisations to use the name of the NPFL and announce an award without recourse to the asset owners,” the league boss said.
Protecting the NPFL brand from ambush
The NPFL is not holding back. Elegbeleye confirmed that the league will use every legal avenue to protect its brand from what he called an “ambush“.
This includes writing to the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to halt these unauthorised activities for good.
“We are going to use every legal channel to protect our asset from this ambush of the NPFL,” he added.
The league body knows who is behind this specific Eunisell award and has issued a stern warning for them to stop immediately.
“There must come a time when we must have to put a stop to end impunity,” Elegbeleye concluded, emphasising the league’s commitment to getting things right.
