Los Ticos capitalized on an ineffectual Japanese attack after a stellar defensive performance to withstand some pressure in the second half and attack quickly.
With Fuller’s goal in the 81st minute, the side that just barely made it into the finals by defeating New Zealand in a playoff moves even with Group E’s top-placed Spain and Japan in terms of points.
The Central Americans ended up scoring with their first attempt on goal after more than 170 minutes of World Cup play.
After demonstrating such grit to recover from a seven-goal thrashing, Costa Rica can now imagine making it to the knockout round and will still be in the running when they play Germany on Thursday.
A disgruntled Japan, meantime, will observe the seismic match between European giants Spain and Germany later today; they were denied a perfect opportunity to guarantee a place in the round of 16.
