Boniface, who had been sidelined since December 2023 due to an adductor injury, finally graced the field for Die Werkself in their encounter against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Wednesday night.
The 23-year-old underwent surgery in January, missing out on numerous matches for both club and country, including the Super Eagles’ 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
In a dominating 4-0 victory over second-division side Düsseldorf in the DFB-Pokal semi-final at the Bay Arena, Boniface made his presence felt by replacing Patrick Schick in the 66th minute.
His return sparked so much joy among fans and teammates, with Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso expressing his delight at having the talented striker back to action.
Alonso commended Boniface for his dedication and hard work in recovering from the injury, emphasising the significance of his return to the team.
“It was special for him to return after three months out. He worked hard to get back on the pitch. He wanted to enjoy it with the players. We needed him back,” remarked Alonso post-match.
Despite his absence, Boniface has been a prolific contributor to Leverkusen’s campaign this season, tallying an impressive 16 goals and seven assists across all competitions.
As he prepares for the final of the DFB Pokal alongside teammate Nathan Tella, Boniface inches closer to claiming his first silverware with Bayer Leverkusen.
