Despite being a seasoned campaigner with years of experience under his belt and nearing a decade of international football, the Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong has made it clear that he is far from considering retirement plans.
At 31, the Super Eagles stalwart has plenty more to give, and with the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) just around the corner, he’s focused on adding to his already impressive international career, Footballrover reports.
But there’s a catch—will he hang up his boots after the 2025 tournament? Troost-Ekong suggests the decision about his future with the national team isn’t entirely in his hands.
The defender made his debut for Nigeria in 2015 and has since established himself as a cornerstone of the Super Eagles defence.
Troost-Ekong’s retirement plans: still going strong
With 75 international appearances, including significant roles in three World Cup matches and 16 AFCON games, his place in Nigerian football history has been sealed and delivered.
Despite his achievements, Troost-Ekong’s journey with the national team is far from over.
“I am very proud to have already done almost 10 years, but I am not finished yet; I still have some targets to achieve,” he said.
Having recently been named to the 2023 AFCON Team of the Tournament and being in the running for the 2024 African Footballer of the Year award alongside Ademola Lookman, William’s influence remains undeniable.
However, his rise to prominence wasn’t solely down to his defensive skills. He credits his teammate, Alex Iwobi, as a key inspiration, calling him the “biggest motivation” in his career.
The synergy between the two has been evident, as Iwobi’s drive has mirrored Troost-Ekong’s commitment to the Super Eagles.
With a clear focus on the future, the Al-Kholood star continues to show his readiness for the challenges ahead.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the 2025 AFCON qualifier against Rwanda, the Nigerian centre-back emphasised that he still has personal goals to achieve before considering stepping away.
While speculation about his retirement plans swirls, he assures that he is looking forward to both the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 World Cup.
“I am still 31, the next AFCON is just 12 months away, and there’s still the 2026 World Cup tournament to look forward to. After that, we will see! It’s not my decision. As long as I am still invited by the coaches, I still have much more to give,” he concluded.
