Super Falcons star Toni Payne delivered an eye-catching performance in the English Women’s Super League (WSL) on Sunday evening, grabbing a vital assist against Brighton.
However, her brilliance was overshadowed by a heartbreaking late defeat at Walton Hall Park, Footballrover reports.
The 30-year-old forward contributed Everton’s second goal of the contest during a thrilling Matchday 20 encounter.
Despite battling hard, Everton succumbed to a dramatic 3-2 defeat against Brighton in front of their home fans.
Toni Payne ends 57-day drought with assist against Brighton
Toni Payne’s assist against Brighton marked her fourth in the WSL this season, lifting her total goal contributions across all competitions to seven — one goal and four assists in the WSL, plus one assist each in the Women’s League Cup and Women’s FA Cup.
It was her first assist since February 16, 2025, when she set up Everton’s lone goal during their narrow 2-1 loss to Chelsea Ladies.
Before breaking the dry spell against Brighton, Toni Payne had endured a 57-day assist drought, featuring in five matches without recording a goal contribution.
In Sunday’s clash, Payne played 80 minutes before being substituted for Rikke Marie Madsen.

Brighton quickly responded, levelling through Michelle Agyemang in the 21st minute after good work from Kiko Seike.
Everton immediately reclaimed the lead as Toni Payne laid off a superb cross from the right wing to Katja Snoeijs, who made it 2-1 in the 23rd minute.
Just before halftime, Fran Kirby equalised for Brighton, setting up a tense and nervy second half.
When it seemed like both sides would settle for a point, heartbreak struck for Everton deep into stoppage time.
Nikita Parris pounced in the 93rd minute to complete Brighton’s stunning comeback, sealing a 3-2 victory.
The tough loss sees Everton extend their winless streak to three matches — two defeats and a draw — as they slip to eighth in the WSL standings with 20 points.
They will now turn their focus to a crucial Merseyside derby against Liverpool.
