Super Falcons’ World Cup Preparation Plagued by Controversies

The coach of the Super Falcons, Randy Waldrum, has publicly voiced his concerns about the team’s preparation for the global women’s football championship.

In an interview with the John Krysinsky Podcast, during the Sounding Off Soccer program, Coach Randy Waldrum expressed his dissatisfaction with the Federation (NFF) and their lack of support.

He stated that he knew they were not adequately prepared and mentioned the cancellation of the planned 10-12 day camp in Nigeria before heading to Australia for another 10-15 days.

Coach Randy Waldrum expressed his disappointment that he would not be accompanied by his assistant coach, Lauren Gregg, to the World Cup.

He also revealed that the players had not received their payments following the loss in the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Final in Morocco.

This led to a boycott of training before the match against Zambia.

Tochukwu Oluehi, the backup goalkeeper, had a conversation with the federation about the issue of non-payment.

Unfortunately, the federation reacted unfavorably to her manner of speaking and subsequently dismissed her from the National Team.

Eventually, they allowed her to return on the condition that she write an apology letter.

In addition, Coach Randy Waldrum disclosed that the NFF insisted on selecting a goalkeeper from Nigeria for the World Cup, despite the fact that he had never seen this goalkeeper before and they had not been part of the training camps.

He declined this request, citing the terms of his contract that granted him the authority to choose his team.

As a response, the federation retaliated by prohibiting him from bringing his assistant coach, Lauren Gregg.

Overall, the Super Falcons’ preparation for the Women’s World Cup seems to be marred by various issues, including canceled training camps, payment disputes, and conflicts between the coach and the federation.

These challenges may have a significant impact on the team’s performance and cohesion in the upcoming tournament.
