The Super Falcons of Nigeria secured their spot in the 13th edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a stunning comeback, defeating hosts Cape Verde 2-1 and sealing a dominant 7-1 aggregate victory in the final qualification round.
The game ignited at Santiago-EstΓ‘dio Nacional Cabo Verde as Cape Verde surged ahead, with Ivania Tavares Moreira netting in the 9th minute, setting the stage for an intense battle, Footballrover reports.
The home team, driven by early success, earned several corner kicks in their favour after pressing hard against Nigeria’s defence.
However, the resilient Super Falcons, backed by spirited cheers from the Nigerian community in the stands, repelled the attacks and swiftly retaliated with their own offensive maneuvers.
Despite their efforts, halftime arrived with Cape Verde in the lead.
Coach Justin Madugu’s tactical shift at halftime saw Esther Onyenezide and Esther Okoronkwo inject into the action, replacing Peace Efih and Uchenna Kanu.
Okoronkwo’s initial goal was ruled offside, but her persistence paid off as she netted an equaliser, levelling the score.
The game intensified with missed opportunities on both sides, including near-misses from Captain Rasheedat Ajibade and substitute Rinsola Babajide.
However, Ajibade sealed Nigeria’s triumph in added time, clinching victory and confirming the Falcons as a formidable force in the upcoming finals.
