Eric Chelle has unveiled Nigeria’s squad for the crucial FIFA World Cup Playoffs in Morocco — and the biggest talking point is the return of Maduka Okoye and Chidera Ejuke.
The Super Eagles boss retained most of the players who hammered Benin Republic 4–0 last month, keeping continuity at the heart of his selection, Footballrover reports.
Maduka Okoye Returns After Suspension
Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye makes his long-awaited comeback to the Super Eagles after a turbulent spell on the sidelines.
The Udinese shot-stopper recently marked his return to club football in a 1–1 Serie A draw with Cremonese, ending nearly five months without competitive action.
Okoye had been serving suspension for illegal betting activities but has since rebuilt form and fitness, earning Chelle’s trust ahead of the playoffs.
Ejuke Rejoins After Injury Struggles
Also making a notable return is Chidera Ejuke, who has battled through a series of injuries over the past year.
The winger’s inclusion signals a renewed attacking option for Nigeria, marking his first call-up since October 2024, with Eric Chelle eager to reintroduce his pace and flair on the flanks.
Defender Semi Ajayi makes the list as well but will not have the chance to feature against Gabon due to suspension issues.

Super Eagles Eye Redemption in Morocco
Paul Onuachu’s omission comes as a shock. Despite finishing as the top scorer in the Turkish Super Lig, the Trabzonspor striker has once again been overlooked, while Chrisantus Uche also misses out on a call-up for the World Cup playoffs.
The Super Eagles are set to face Gabon, DR Congo, and Cameroon in the playoff fixtures in Morocco.
Historically, Nigeria and Gabon have faced off in five competitive matches, with Nigeria winning three, Gabon claiming one victory, and one encounter ending in a draw.
After narrowly edging Benin to reach this stage, Chelle’s men will aim to secure a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with their renewed strength and squad depth.
