The manager of the Nigerian senior team commended the Flamingos for their dedication and perseverance in securing third place, saying that Nigerian women’s football has a promising future.

The Flamingos defeated Germany in a thrilling penalty shootout on Sunday afternoon to claim Nigeria’s first-ever bronze medal at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

On Sunday, Nigeria’s Under-17 ladies crushed their Germany counterpart to win World Cup Bronze medal, making sure they didn’t leave India the same way they came in.

Both teams first faced off against one another during the group rounds, and despite the Flamingoes holding a one-goal advantage in the opening match of the competition, they were defeated 2-1 by the Germans.

Opeyemi Ajakaye, who was active and vivacious, scored a goal against Germany to preserve her hard work throughout the competition.

The Flamingoes had a commanding lead when Amina Bello produced the game’s second goal in the 48th minute, before substitute Etim Edidiong extended the Germans’ woes in the 63rd.

The Germans scored three goals to pull even when the Flamingoes caught napped, tying the game.

They continued playing, but the German women ended up missing three penalties in the shootout, which gave Nigeria the victory.

The Nigerian girls’ World Cup journey was full of peaks after they broke the quarterfinal jinx by first reaching the semifinals before falling to Colombia by a razor-thin margin.
