After leading Rivers United to a 2-1 victory over Wydad AC on Sunday, head coach Stanley Eguma has acknowledged that his squad would face a tough challenge against the Moroccan team.
Eguma reassured Nigerians that his Rivers United team will exert tremendous pressure on their opponents in the second leg of the match in order to ensure that they advanced to the CAF Champions League group stage.
Malachi Ohawume and Paul Acquah scored in matter of seconds as Rivers United battled back from a goal down to defeat Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco 2-1 in the first leg of their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League first preliminary round match on Sunday.
After 32 minutes, Bouly Sambou gave Wydad AC the lead at the Adokiye Amiesimaka, but just two minutes later, Malachi Ohawume leveled the score after receiving a pass from Nyima Nwagua.
Morice Chukwu beautifully set up Paul Acquah for the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute, giving Coach Stanley Eguma’s team the upperhand heading into the second leg at the Stade Mohammed V stadium in Casablanca this coming weekend.

Paul Acquah delivered a performance to remember and right after the game, Rivers United’s technical manager Stanley Eguma stated that the team should not yet be written off.
“It’s tight but i am very optimistic, it’s a game of football. If you look at the standard of the game today, Wydad AC was not far better than us (Rivers United). All we need do is to summon courage and then make our tactical plans on how to play them in Morocco. It’s a difficult terrain but its football, its not mathematics.” – Stanley Eguma said.
He added;
“I know a lot of people will write us off but i want to let you know that it is not yet over. Within us, we know that we have a big fight to do and am assuring you that we will not go there to sleep but to work and also put them under severe pressure to see that we get passage through to the group stage.”
