The road to Rinsola Babajide’s first WAFCON call-up
Her first WAFCON call-up must be a dream come true, adding fresh energy to Nigeria’s quest for a record 10th continental title.
The journey for the Super Falcons to the 13th WAFCON finals in Morocco (July 5th – 26th) is already in full swing.
“Guyssss, I’m going to my first senior major tournament! It’s the greatest honour knowing I’ll be representing my country at the African Cup of Nations. Thank you for all the love & support up until this point! God did,” she wrote on her X (Twitter) platform.
Head Coach Justine Madugu has assembled a strong squad of 24 players, blending seasoned veterans with promising new talents.
Key players such as captain Rasheedat Ajibade, star goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, and prolific forwards Francisca Ordega and Asisat Oshoala are all geared up.
The team has already started with intensive training sessions in Abuja, Nigeria, and is set to depart for a final training camp in Lisbon, Portugal, on Sunday morning.
Madugu’s selection also features strong defensive and midfield stars, including Saudi Arabia-based Ashleigh Plumptre, US-based Michelle Alozie, veteran Osinachi Ohale, and midfielders Deborah Abiodun, Jennifer Echegini, and Christy Ucheibe.
Homegrown talents like goalkeeper Rachael Unachukwu and defenders Sikiratu Isah and Miracle Usani have also earned their spots, with midfield general Halimatu Ayinde making a welcome return.
The Nigeria Football Federation has arranged crucial friendly matches against Portugal on June 23rd in Lisbon and Ghana on June 29th in Morocco, providing the perfect warm-up for their Group B encounters against Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria in Casablanca.
