Remo Stars reached a new milestone over the weekend by scoring two goals in an away game against Abia Warriors for the first time, breaking a long-standing curse at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
After three fruitless visits, the Sky Blue Stars finally turned the tide with an impressive display that saw them claim a 2-0 victory, Footballrover reports.
Abia Warriors fans had hoped for a bright start at home, but the Ikenne Boys had other plans on the NPFL’s opening day.
Even in the absence of their head coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, who is currently on national duty with the Super Eagles, Remo Stars showed why they finished as runners-up last season.
The match, played in front of a large, enthusiastic home crowd, was filled with thrilling moments from both sides.
However, it was the visitors who had the decisive edge.
Goals from Sodiq Ismail and Babajide Fatokun secured all three points for the away side, giving their campaign the perfect start.
How Remo Stars Shattered the Umuahia Hoodoo
Both teams began the game on a strong note, but neither managed to break the deadlock in the first half.
It wasn’t until after the interval that the magic happened.
Just three minutes into the second period of the game, Sodiq Ismail opened the scoring with a stunning finish.
Interestingly, Ismail, who netted Remo Stars’ final goal of last season, picked up right where he left off, becoming the team’s first scorer in the new campaign.
The Sky Blue Stars didn’t stop there.
Thirteen minutes after Ismail’s opener, Jide Fatokun doubled the lead with a well-timed header from a corner, silencing the home fans and sealing the milestone victory.
Remo Stars have now set a new precedent in Umuahia, proving they can break barriers and overcome past struggles, all while starting the NPFL season in style.
