The home team got off to a strong start, quickly gaining control of the match, and should have gone up three goals early on but didn’t take advantage.

The Abia Warriors gained momentum and reclaimed the initiative from the home team. They took the lead after just two minutes into the second half.

The Stanley Eguma team fought their way back into the game after going behind to a goal from Nweke Kalu, and they received their reward late in the game when Morice Chukwu buried a penalty kick.

Morice Chukwu scored a well-taken penalty-kick equalizer to give Rivers United a hard-earned draw against the visiting Warriors on Sunday evening.

After a flick from Nyima Nwagua, an Abia Warriors defender controlled the ball with his hand inside the box, giving Rivers United a chance to equalize.

Morice Chukwu stepped up and converted the resulting penalty kick.

Since both sides were forced to split the points, there was no clear winner at the conclusion of the encounter.

What it means for Rivers United

With 19 points and a goal differential of +5, the Pride of Rivers overtake Lobi Stars for first position in NPFL group B.

What’s next for the Port Harcourt outfit?

The TotalEnergies CAF Confederation’s Cup will now be Rivers United’s primary focus, and on Sunday, April 2, 2023, they will travel down to Ivory Coast to play ASEC Mimosa in their final group B match.
