The Super Eagles’ flight to AFCON hit turbulence as they stumbled to a 0-2 defeat against Guinea in a pre-tournament friendly played in Abu Dhabi.
Just 14 minutes in, Aguibou Camara put Guinea ahead, dampening Nigeria’s spirits, Footballrover reports.
Moses Simon had a chance to equalise from the penalty spot, but his effort was denied by Ibrahim Kone in the 20th minute.
The penalty stemmed from a tackle on Sadiq Umar in the box.
Guinea doubled their lead in the 64th minute through Facinet Conte, leaving Coach Peseiro’s men with much to ponder before the tournament kicks off.
Squad Experimentation?
Peseiro opted for an experimental lineup, featuring Moses Simon, Sadiq Umar, and Samuel Chukwueze in attack.
The midfield saw Alhassan Yusuf, Raphael Onyedika, and newcomer Chidozie Awaziem take the reins.
Defensively, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Kenneth Omeruo, William Trost-Ekong, and Zaidu Samuel were deployed, with South Africa-based Stanley Nwabali tending the goal.
Farewell Dinner and Onward to Ivory Coast
Despite the setback, the Super Eagles’ journey to the AFCON continues.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will host the team for a special farewell dinner tonight before their departure to Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, tomorrow morning.
The tournament kicks off on January 13th, and the Eagles will be hoping to take flight with renewed focus and determination.
