Heartbreak struck the Super Eagles camp as Bayer Leverkusen attacker Victor Boniface was ruled out of the Africa Cup of Nations (2023) due to a groyne injury sustained in training.
Boniface, in blistering form for his Bundesliga club, was poised to be one of the tournament’s breakout stars, Footballrover reports.
However, fate cruelly intervened just six days before the opening match, dashing his AFCON aspirations and leaving him lamenting on social media.
This isn’t the first time Boniface has been struck by misfortune on the cusp of a major tournament.
In 2019, a similar injury forced him out of the CAF U20 Nations Cup just a week before kickoff.
“U20 nations cup got injured 7 days before Nations Cup. Super Eagles got injured 6 days before Nations Cup. Only God knows why,” the 23-year-old wrote on X.

The Super Eagles, though undoubtedly hit hard by Boniface’s absence, have moved swiftly to fill the void.
OGC Nice forward Terem Moffi has been called up as a replacement, injecting fresh energy into the attack.
With Moffi joining forces alongside established names like Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon, the Super Eagles remain contenders for continental glory.
However, Boniface’s absence leaves a noticeable void, and his pace and clinical finishing are a blow to the squad’s depth.
The striker’s injury saga adds a layer of drama to the already captivating AFCON narrative.
While Boniface faces weeks of recovery, the Super Eagles march on, determined to honour his spirit and bring home the trophy.
