Super Eagles defender Kevin Akpoguma has reaffirmed his commitment to German Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim, a club he has called home for over a decade.
Despite not being initially hailed as a top talent, the 29-year-old has carved out a remarkable career, becoming a cornerstone of Hoffenheim’s defensive unit and consistently giving 100% to the team’s cause, Footballrover reports.
A decade of dedication: Akpoguma’s Hoffenheim journey
Akpoguma’s Bundesliga journey began in October 2017 when he debuted in a 1-1 draw against VfL Wolfsburg.
Over the years, he steadily established himself as a reliable and versatile defender, earning the trust of coaches and teammates.
His contributions have been instrumental in Hoffenheim’s successes, including European campaigns and intense relegation battles.
With over a decade at the club, Akpoguma has amassed significant experience, ranking among Hoffenheim’s top ten players with the most Bundesliga appearances.
This season alone, he has featured in 22 matches across all competitions, showing off his leadership and consistency.
Reflecting on his career, Akpoguma acknowledged his gradual transition into the latter stages of his playing years as he approaches his 30th birthday.
Despite feeling physically strong, he recognises Hoffenheim’s philosophy of prioritising young talents and remains committed to his role for as long as the club values his contributions.
Super Eagles defender on proving himself
Akpoguma openly admitted he was never considered a top talent like former Hoffenheim stars Niklas Süle and Joelinton but emphasised his commitment to delivering strong performances.
“I may never have been a top talent like Niklas Süle, Joelinton, or Christoph Baumgartner, who were sold for a lot of money, but I delivered my performances. And as long as the club wants to go down this path with me, I will continue to give one hundred percent for TSG,” he told the club website.
Internationally, the Super Eagles defender last played for Nigeria in 2023, featuring briefly in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
While the 29-year-old left-back/center-back is currently ranked lower in the pecking order for national team selection, Akpoguma’s dedication to club and country remains unquestionable.
“They stopped calling me for Super Eagles games after 2023, but I am available for Coach Eguavoen. I will keep doing my best, and hopefully, I will get a chance,” he said.
