I'll Learn From My Mistakes: Player Who Shunned AFCON 2023 Now Suspended Till End of the Tournament

Abdul Fatawu, the rising Ghanaian player who controversially opted out of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2023 to focus on his club career with Leicester City, is now facing a double dose of disappointment after receiving a red card that will sideline him for three crucial matches.

Fatawu’s red card came in Leicester’s Championship clash against Coventry City, a reckless challenge that earned him an early exit and left his team with a numerical disadvantage, Footballrover reports.

The Leicester City forward earned a straight red card in their 3-1 defeat to Coventry City and is poised to miss virtually a month of play.

Just before heading into the interval, the youngster—who is currently on loan from Sporting—bagged red for a careless challenge on Jake Bidwell of Coventry.

The suspension means he will miss the Foxes’ next three games, a significant blow to his hopes of establishing himself as a regular starter at the King Power Stadium.

Adding to Fatawu’s woes is the fact that his AFCON gamble appears to have backfired spectacularly.

Footballrover understands that the Ghanaian player rejected the invitation of the Ghana national team to play in the AFCON 2023 so as to maintain his position with Leicester City.

Unfortunately for him, he received a red card that will prevent him from participating in 3 matches until February 10, with AFCON ending on February 11.

It was so disappointing for me to be the cause of our defeats. I will learn from my mistakes, and I will thank my teammates for the effort they gave out, and thanks to the fans for the lovely support. Only God knows how desperate I was to win this game, and only God knows the best. As I am a learner, I will learn from my mistakes and get better. This will even make me stronger to fight for the shirt and give more to the team to achieve the goal we all want to achieve. God is in control,” he wrote on his Instagram page.

Abdul Fatawu is not expected to participate in the FA Cup on January 27–28, the Championship game away at Stoke City on February 3, or the encounter against Ipswich on January 22.

He will make his comeback on February 10th against Watford.

He has featured in 24 games for Leicester City this season but only managed to find the back of the net just twice.
