In a captivating Championship clash, Southampton emerged triumphant with a nail-biting 4-3 win against Birmingham City, thanks to a dramatic 96th-minute winner from Joe Aribo after coming in as a substitute.
The Super Eagles star, Aribo, had his moment of brilliance by netting the decisive goal deep into stoppage time, sealing a hard-fought victory for Southampton despite coming in late into the encounter, Footballrover reports.
The seven-goal thriller kicked off with Koji Miyoshi swiftly putting Birmingham ahead in the second minute.
However, Southampton’s response was rapid, with Adam Armstrong levelling the scoreline in the 18th minute.
Birmingham regained the lead just before halftime courtesy of Jay Stansfield’s strike in the 41st minute.
After the break, Southampton seized control, turning the tide with goals from David Brooks and Che Adams within a four-minute span.
Birmingham’s hopes suffered a further blow when Dion Sanderson received a red card in the 62nd minute.
Despite being reduced to ten men, Birmingham displayed resilience and managed to pull one back through Juninho Bacuna in the 77th minute, setting the stage for a tense end.
With the match hanging in the balance, Aribo, who entered the fray in the 70th minute, emerged as the hero, delivering a last-gasp winner in the 96th minute, securing all three points for Southampton.
Aribo’s match-winning goal marked his third strike in 24 league appearances for Southampton this season, bolstering the team’s promotion aspirations.
The victory propels Southampton up the Championship table, positioning them just eight points behind league leaders Leicester City.
With 70 points from 35 games, Southampton currently occupies the fourth spot, firmly in contention for promotion.
