Former presidential candidate Peter Obi erupted in joy alongside millions of Nigerians as the Super Eagles clinched a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Angola, securing their place in the AFCON 2023 semi-finals.
The former Anambra governor, who witnessed the match live in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, described the experience as “truly delightful and uplifting.”
He commended the team’s “strength of an eagle,” praising their patriotism, professionalism, and electrifying performance, Footballrover reports.
“The energy, passion, and composure they brought to the game were admirable and befitting of our great nation,” Obi declared.
“Their victory today and in the future is our victory as a nation. We remain a nation of winners, and no matter how dark the night has been in our land, we will triumph over all our challenges into the New Nigeria of our dreams.”
The victory wasn’t without its tense moments. The Eagles battled it out in Ivory Coast, ultimately holding their nerve thanks to a 41st-minute goal from Ademola Lookman.
While a second goal by Victor Osimhen was disallowed for offside, Lookman’s strike proved decisive.
Obi acknowledged the Angolan team’s sportsmanship, commending their performance despite the loss.
He concluded by reiterating his congratulations to the Super Eagles and the entire nation:
“Congratulations, Super Eagles! Congratulations Nigeria!”
Congratulations Super Eagles.
Congratulations Nigeria. -PO— Peter Obi (@PeterObi) February 2, 2024
