Southampton’s season has been nothing short of disastrous, with the team rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table with just one win in 15 matches and staring relegation square in the face.
However, there may be a glimmer of hope on the way.
Speaking ahead of the team’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur, manager Russell Martin confirmed that Paul Onuachu has returned from injury, and he’s now seen as Southampton’s lifeline.
Could his comeback change their fortunes?
A desperate need for goals
Southampton’s goal drought has been a critical factor in their struggles this season, and it’s a problem Paul Onuachu is expected to help solve.
The 30-year-old Super Eagles striker was handed a rare start in the 3-2 loss to Liverpool last month, where he impressed until his substitution.
However, his subsequent injury sidelined him for three crucial matches, deepening the team’s woes.
Mixed fortunes for Onuachu at Southampton
Since joining the Saints, Onuachu has struggled to make his mark. Despite being involved in seven games across all competitions this season, he has yet to find the back of the net.
His stint with the club has been far from fruitful, leading to a brief loan move to Trabzonspor last season.
A permanent move to the Turkish side fell through in the summer, leaving the towering forward to fight for his place at the Premier League side.
Can Onuachu be the Saints’ saviour?
Russell Martin has this to say:
“Paul Onuachu’s back, which is really good, and apart from that we’re all good,” the Southampton manager told the club’s official website.
Paul gives us a real alternative option that’s different to anyone in the squad and most people in the league, actually.
“He was really unfortunate at the timing of his injury as he was in such a good place and was going to really help us, I think, and now he’s going to help us moving forward,” the Saints boss concluded.
As Southampton prepare for Tottenham, fans will be hoping his return will mark the beginning of a great escape, or is it too little, too late?
