The hopes of Fenerbahce progressing to the group stages of UEFA Champions League qualifiers were dashed on Tuesday night, despite the efforts of Super Eagles right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel.
The Turkish side fell short of reaching the group stage in front of their home fans, Footballrover reports.
Osayi-Samuel gave it his all for 63 minutes before being substituted for Turkish defender Mert Muldur.
Despite scoring the first goal late into the game, Fenerbahce couldnât overturn the deficit from the first leg, where they suffered a 2-1 loss.
They only managed a 1-1 draw in a nail-biting extra-time match, exiting the competition with a 3-2 aggregate defeat.
The result marks a rocky start for the legendary Jose Mourinho at the helm of Fenerbahce.
The matchâs turning point came when Jonathan David’s extra-time penalty sealed the deal, extinguishing Fenerbahce’s European dreams for the season.
Drama unfolded late in the game when Bafode Diakiteâs unfortunate own goal pushed the contest into extra time, giving Fenerbahce a glimmer of hope.

However, Aissa Mandi received a red card on his debut for Lille for a reckless challenge on Irfan Can Kahveci, reducing his side to ten men.
A handball by Jayden Oosterwolde handed Lille a penalty, and Jonathan David stepped up to deliver the decisive blow.
