The Turkish side fell short of reaching the group stage in front of their home fans, Footballrover reports.

Osayi-Samuel gave it his all for 63 minutes before being substituted for Turkish defender Mert Muldur.

Despite scoring the first goal late into the game, Fenerbahce couldn’t overturn the deficit from the first leg, where they suffered a 2-1 loss.

They only managed a 1-1 draw in a nail-biting extra-time match, exiting the competition with a 3-2 aggregate defeat.

The result marks a rocky start for the legendary Jose Mourinho at the helm of Fenerbahce.

The match’s turning point came when Jonathan David’s extra-time penalty sealed the deal, extinguishing Fenerbahce’s European dreams for the season.

Drama unfolded late in the game when Bafode Diakite’s unfortunate own goal pushed the contest into extra time, giving Fenerbahce a glimmer of hope.

However, Aissa Mandi received a red card on his debut for Lille for a reckless challenge on Irfan Can Kahveci, reducing his side to ten men.

Their victory propels them into the final qualifying round, where they will face either Slavia Prague or Union Saint-Gilloise.
