Nigerian defender Bruno Onyemaechi found the back of the net for the first time this season on Monday, but his goal wasn’t enough to save Boavista from a 2-2 draw away to Estrela in the Portuguese topflight.
Onyemaechi and his teammates came into the match hungry for their first win since a goalless draw with Estoril, but once again, victory slipped through their fingers, Footballrover reports.
Boavista struck first when Onyemaechi fired them ahead in the 23rd minute, only for former Manchester United star Nani to level the score just 11 minutes later.
The visitors reclaimed the lead in stoppage time through Ilija Vukotic, heading into the break with a 2-1 advantage.
However, Estrela clawed their way back, equalising in the 67th minute thanks to Kikas.
Just a minute later, Boavista’s Pedro Tavares Almeida saw red, leaving the team to battle the final stretch with 10 men.
Despite the disadvantage, they managed to hold on for a point.
For Onyemaechi, it was a long-awaited return to the scoresheet, with his last goal coming back in January when Boavista secured a 4-2 win over Portimonense.
Boavista have now gone four games without a win, drawing two and losing two.
Their only victory came on the opening day of the season against Casa Pia.
They currently sit 13th on the table with just five points, perilously close to the drop zone.
Next up? A daunting clash with Benfica at home, where Onyemaechi and his team will need to step up their game if they hope to turn their season around.
Buckle up, Boavista fans—it’s going to be a tough ride!
