After scoring in their last encounter to secure an away draw against Estrela, Bruno Onyemaechi watched as his team, Boavista, suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Benfica.
The 25-year-old was a significant inspiration in the previous match, scoring his first goal of the season to propel Boavista to a thrilling four-goal encounter with Estrela, Footballrover reports.
Entering the fixture against Benfica on Monday, Onyemaechi was eager to build on that confidence.
Unfortunately, Boavista lost 3-0 in front of their home fans at the Estádio do Bessa Século XXI, a match that saw the visitors dominate in both ball possession and goal attempts.
Named in the starting lineup, Onyemaechi played the full 90 minutes for the Portuguese club.
His defensive contributions were commendable, as he won four ground duels, made two crucial recoveries, and executed one tackle.
Of his 49 touches on the ball, the Nigerian defender completed 30 accurate passes, delivered four solid long balls, and made two clearances along with one block.
The visiting side took the lead just 11 minutes into the game, thanks to Vangelis Pavlidis.
Twenty minutes later, Benfica doubled their advantage with a goal from Orkun Kokcu, leaving Boavista trailing at halftime.
Boavista struggled to mount a comeback in the second half, and just as the match was heading toward its final whistle, Arthur Cabral scored a third goal for the visitors, sealing the win and all three points.
Boavista has now gone five games without a victory, recording two draws and three losses.

The defeat leaves them in 15th place with five points after six matches, perilously close to the relegation zone, just one point above it.
However, Bruno Onyemaechi and his teammates must keep their heads up as they seek their first three points when they face Santa Clara next Sunday.
