Oluwatosin Blessing Demehin’s long-awaited UEFA Women’s Champions League debut took a harsh turn as her Galatasaray side suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat against Lyon in their opening match at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
The 22-year-old Nigerian, signed by Galatasaray Petrol Ofisi on a one-year deal, featured for the entire 90 minutes but found herself on the losing end as Lyon dominated from start to finish, Footballrover reports.
Galatasaray entered the contest on the back of a strong domestic run, but they were completely outclassed by a Lyon team that showed their superiority early on.
The Turkish club could only muster a meager three attempts on goal compared to Lyon’s relentless 47.
Galatasaray crumble despite Demehin’s efforts in defence
The home side made their intentions clear, applying pressure throughout the match. Lyon opened the scoring in the 34th minute through Kadidiatou Diani, and things went downhill for Demehin and her teammates.
By the 45th minute, Vanessa Gilles had doubled Lyon’s lead, making it an uphill battle for the visitors.
Lyon sealed their victory in the 77th minute when Diani scored her second goal, leaving Galatasaray with no response and plenty to reflect on after a punishing evening.
Despite the defeat, Demehin made a commendable contribution to her team’s defensive efforts.
She completed 25 passes, registered four clearances, won two tackles, and made a key block.
However, her efforts were overshadowed by Galatasaray’s overall lack of resistance against their French opponents.
With this loss, Galatasaray now sits at the bottom of their group and will need to recover quickly as they prepare for their next league game against Fenerbahce Women in matchday six of the Turkish Super Lig.
For Demehin, her debut was far from the dream start she could had hoped for, but she will aim to bounce back stronger.
