It was a role that became a hallmark of his career, particularly in the double pivot formation used by Barnsley manager Darrell Clarke.

His ability to control the tempo of the game from deep has remained a strong asset, yet, as he continues to evolve, he is keen on improving certain aspects of his overall game.

Currently, Nwakali’s appearances at Barnsley have been limited, with just a handful of minutes in the league after his summer transfer from Portuguese club Chaves.

Despite this, the 26-year-old remains hopeful about his prospects. Nwakali’s quest for more playing time has led him to focus on increasing his fitness and tactical awareness, something he knows is essential to challenging for a place in Clarke’s preferred starting XI.

In an insightful interview, Nwakali revealed the three midfield positions he is capable of playing.

Aside from his familiar role as a defensive midfielder, he also sees himself excelling in more advanced roles.

I can play as a ten or an eight. But most times I have played as six,” Nwakali said as quoted by Barnsley Chronicle.

“The most important thing is the team. That comes first before individuals.

“Whatever the gaffer thinks, is best for the team. There is a lot off competition. I want to play but it’s not my decision,” Nwakali stressed.

“The most important thing is to be ready to help the team, and give a good response. I have been waiting for the opportunity. I said to myself: ‘it’s time to take this opportunity, but don’t be selfish, do the right thing to help the team.

“We spoke within the week and the gaffer told me I have what he likes in a player. He’s one of the gaffers who gives you confidence as a player,” the Nigerian midfielder said.

His main struggle lies in adapting to the physical demands of League One football, but with time and effort, Nwakali is confident he will overcome this hurdle and become a key player for Barnsley.

With competition fierce and the stakes high, Nwakali is focused on proving that he can be more than just a defensive option.

The most important thing is football is played in two phases. I know when it comes to the attacking part, I am very good. But I have to improve my defending. I have been working with the gaffer and the backroom staff to improve that.

“To be able to play you have to be fit and it’s all about physicality in League One,” he added.
