The NPFL has dropped a bombshell ahead of the 2025/26 season, kicking off on August 22nd: if your stadium doesn’t have working floodlights and a reliable backup power source, you can forget about playing home matches.
This strict new rule from the Nigerian Premier Football League board is set to shake things up for clubs nationwide, Footballrover reports.
NPFL under floodlights: A bright future?
The league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, sent a strong memo to all clubs, making it crystal clear.
Stadiums without proper LED floodlights and dependable backup power simply won’t get the green light for next season.
This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a firm requirement for professional matchdays, especially for evening games or when the power supply is unstable.
This bold move by the league management is all about improving the game. Owumi stressed that having the right infrastructure, particularly modern floodlights, is super important for smooth match operations.
It means fans can enjoy games without interruptions, even when the sun goes down or power cuts happen.
No home games under floodlights?
The memo, also shared with the league board and staff, is a reminder that all clubs need to have their stadium facilities ready before the regular inspections begin.
The message is simple: upgrade now or face the consequences of not being able to play in your own stadium.
The Nigerian Premier Football League body is not making any exceptions once the 2025/26 season starts.
This isn’t the first time the Nigerian League has issued a directive like this. At the start of last season, the league told all teams to create reliable websites, but that order never fully materialised.
It remains to be seen if clubs, including the newly promoted sides, will comply with this new mandate for stadium floodlights.
